One could get lost in these series
of bays and they go on for miles and miles.
They were all carved by past
glaciers. As a matter of fact, Captain Cook
recorded, in his travels, 200
years ago that most of these bays were covered with glaciers,
with ice as high as 1000 feet
from sea level.
In the picture below is a small
glacier we passed on our way into the larger part of the bay
This is a receeding glacier,
whick means it is melting and calfing faster than it is advancing
I just had to take this fairy
tale picture
One of my favorites. And yes...it
is real.
Everyone had the same idea.
It looked so artificial, like
a backdrop for a picture
Here we are at the Marjorie Glacier
This one calfs at a rate of
6 feet a day, quite fast compared to the others.
We stayed here for well over
an hour, listening to the ice cracking
and watching it calf.
Huge pinnacles of ice ready to
calf.
And when it did calf, it was
like thunder when it fell and hit the water.
Marty and Sue
We sat and watched from their
Veranda while drinking champagne
and eating chocolate covered
strawberries. What a fun afternoon.
A little further away
I zoomed in here to give you
a better look at those pinnacles
